Keep Church and State Separate

We the undersigned express our strong support for the constitutional principle of separation of church and state, as expressed in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and recognized and enforced by the courts. We consider strict church-state separation to be a bedrock principle of the American system of government and one that is essential to the protection of religious liberty in this country.

Accordingly, we call upon you to cease your efforts to have government fund religious social programs under your "Faith-Based Initiatives" and to have tax money diverted to the support of religious schools under various voucher schemes. We consider it to be impossible for religious organizations to provide social services or education independently of their religious mission, and therefore any tax money flowing to those groups necessarily becomes government support of religion, in violation of the principle of church-state separation.

When you became president you took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. Church-state separation is part of that constitution, and your efforts to undermine it are in violation of your oath. We urge you most strongly, then, to respect and uphold your oath and cease your efforts to undermine the separation of church and state.
