Keep MAAI as an Interest Section of the AAAAI

MAAI provides a "home" for those members of the Academy who are interested in the mechanistic underpinnings of asthma and allergic diseases, and plays a critical role in the development of the annual meetingas evidenced by the fact that nearly 20\% of the meeting abstracts come from MAAI. While we understand some of the desire to combine MAAI with the Basic and Clinical Immunology (BCI) interest section, these two groups are focused on different areas of science (MAAI on mechanisms of allergic and asthmatic disease; BCI on the underpinnings of immunodeficiency and genetic basis of allergic diseases). Indeed combining MAAI and BCI would be akin to combining all clinical interest sections together into one single clinical interest section.
Eliminating MAAI will only alienate researchers studying the basic mechanisms of allergies and asthma, and serve to further dilute the amount of mechanistic science being presented at the annual meeting. Therefore, we hope that as the Academy undergoes its strategic re-organization, the Board of Directors will recognize the importance of the MAAI interest section to the scientific mission of this great organization.
Please do not eliminate the MAAI interest section!
