Almost a year ago British Petroleums Macondo Prospect oil rig exploded killing 11 people and releasing 205.8 millions gallons of crude oil in the three months before it was capped into the Gulf of Mexico. Today it is estimated that 80\% of the oil is still in the Gulf. In a deal with U.S. regulators BP plans to restart deep water drilling on ten wells in the Gulf this summer. The terms for the deal state that U.S. regulators have 24 hour access to the wells and there can be no more expletory drilling for now. The environmental organization Greenpeace summed the provisions up well when they said, There is nothing different about the situation now other than regulators may keep a slightly beadier eye on operations." The catastrophe that occurred in the Gulf a year ago is out of the medias eye and therefore out of the mind of the general public but the damage in the Gulf has yet to be fixed. Instead of continuing to clean the Gulf, Bp has decided to begin drilling in the Gulf once more and the American government has allowed it to happen with minimal provisions to lower dependency on foreign oil. Drilling in the Gulf is only a temporary solution though, the only way to guarantee sustainable energy is to invest money in research for clean, renewable fuels. If you agree with my opinions please sign this petition and send it on to your friends. Dont let this injustice go unnoticed. If this petition gets over five thousand signatures I will pass it on to our state legislators who can raise national awareness to stop BP from drilling again.
