Languages and Humanities Core Requirement Petition

Currently at The University of Texas at Dallas, language courses do not count towards the humanities core requirement. Many of UT Dallas language courses, most notably upper-level courses, have curricula that include cultural studies and reviews of original literature. Such courses are not simply a component of a well-rounded and complete education they also provide a vitally important and marketable skill in our increasingly globalized world. Language courses grant students a competitive edge in their field of study and strengthen the University. Adding upper-level language courses to the list of classes that satisfy the core humanities requirement will increase student flexibility for choosing courses as well as increase student interest in The University of Texas at Dallas language programs.
The University of Texas at Dallas upper-level language courses meet the criteria specified by the Texas Higher Coordinating Board for core humanities courses; therefore, they should be allowed to satisfy the core humanities requirement.
As signers of this petition, we, the students of The University of Texas at Dallas, strongly urge that the administration allow upper-level language courses to satisfy the core-curriculum requirement for humanities credit.
