According to the American Psychiatric Associations release No. 02-23 on July16, 2002 APA President, Paul S. Appelbaum, stated, "There is no scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of coercive holding therapies, or so-called "re-birthing techniquesThese extreme methods pose serious risk and should not be used under any circumstances."
According to The Source on Womens Issues in Congress, Volume 10, No. 68 -- ISSN 526-8713, of 2005, Between 1995 and 2005, at least 5 children in the United States have died from forms of attachment therapy.
One of the most well known deaths was of 10 year old Candace Newmaker in 2001. Her death inspired Candaces law which bans the practice of rebirthing in North Carolina and Colorado.
According to the Library of Congress, S. RES.276, on October 18, 2005 Senator Ken Salazar of Colorado introduced a resolution stating that rebirthing was dangerous and should be prohibited. The resolution was approved; however, since then there has been no further action on the resolution. As of yet the resolution merely suggests that rebirthing be banned and has not created any requirements which force states to adopt the policy.
It is the purpose of this petition to encourage Congress to require laws in every state that ban the treatment of rebirthing. Please prevent future deaths by signing today.
