The nations conscience is stirred even as it witnessed worst ever communal violence against the minority Christian community in India. The state government showed its ineptness and remained a mute spectator while violent mobs went on a rampage destroying houses, churches, and orphanages and burning people alive.
Reports reveal that over 50,000 people have been displaced, over 4000 homes destroyed and 20 Christians killed. Thousands of Christians have fled their villages and some 13,000 people are now living in nine relief camps at Chakapad, Tikabali, G. Udaygiri, Raikia, Baliguda, K.Nuagoan and Phiringia. About 200 villages have been affected by the organized attacks and hundreds of churches including house churches have been burnt down.
All this has happened after the murder of swami laxmananda saraswati allegedly by Maoist and after the body of slain leader was allowed to be taken from street after street by the VHP and their sympathizers to rouse passion and hatred.
We concerned citizens of this country and civil society across the world appeal with a united voice to put an end to this politics of hate and reign in the murderous elements as their place is behind bars and not among the civil society. This is also a warning for all those concerned citizens of this country who think that we are going to become a super power in the world. We have an enemy within which doesnt want this country to progress socially and economically and stand head high in the comity of nations.
We appeal to you to use your powers as Prime Minister of India, and the tremendous force of your good office, to rush adequate Central forces, including contingents of the Armed Forces if required, to restore law and order and governance in the state of Orissa particularly in the Kandhamal region. We further request you to ensure that an adequate compensation is given to those affected by this man-made tragedy.
The consequences of any further delay may be catastrophic for the Christian community in the State in particular, for peace in Orissa in general, and for the name of India as a secular country
