I would like to put forward a motion to have the Crosswalks at Masons Beach at the Renfrew Rd and Shawnigan Lake Rd intersection updated with bright paint and for larger signs at the Crosswalk and before, to emphasize that pedestrians are crossing.
Crosswalks are an essential tool for helping pedestrians move safely, conveniently and predictably across roadways. Crosswalks can also provide a unique streetscape design to emphasize pedestrians’ presence and primacy. Crosswalks should alert the drivers to expect crossing pedestrians.
Currently the crosswalk at Masons Beach does not meet the above standards, putting all pedestrians at a high risk of being hit by a motor vehicle. Living in Shawnigan Lake I have witnessed and experienced on multiple occasions almost being hit by vehicles at this crosswalk.
Just yesterday I stopped to let a child cross, and an impatient driver thought it was a great opportunity to go around me, I honked my horn to get the child’s attention and luckily the child stopped midway while the Van flew past.
Please help to ensure the safety of the Shawnigan Lake Community by showing support in updating our crosswalks at Masons’ Beach at Renfrew Rd and Shawnigan Lake Rd.
