Moratorium on Promotions and Recruitment in the Irish Reserve Defence Force.

The Irish Government has announced a moratorium on promotions and recruitment to the Public Service, including the Defence Forces, with effect from 27th March 2009. Despite the official Department of Finance press release referring to the Permanent Defence Force only, the Department of Defence has interpreted the instruction as applying to the Reserve Defence Force. This means that no RDF post, however arising, may be filled by recruitment, promotion, or by the payment of an allowance for the performance of duties at a higher rank. Any exceptions to this principle will require the prior sanction of the Minister for Finance.
Paragraph written on behalf of Potential Recruits affected by the Irish Government's decision.
We applied to join the Reserve Defence Force in the spirit of volunteerism. We were committed to performing our civic duty by being part of the Irish Defence Forces. We have endured significant delays in security clearance processing and the administration of medical assessments and just when there was light at the end of the tunnel our government told us they didn't need us.
We call on the Minister for Defence, Willie O'Dea, and the Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan, in the interests of the country to lift this ban on recruitment to the RDF.
