On March 4, 2005, the investigative authorities proposed to the Peoples Supreme Procuracy to prosecute journalist Nguyễn Thị Lan Anh of Tuổi Trẻ Newspaper for appropriating a state-secret document.
Journalist Lan Anh reported on the Ministry of Healths plan to conduct a comprehensive inspection on Zuellig Pharma Vietnam, a pharmaceutical company believed to be manipulating the drug market, fixing drug prices, thus, bringing harm to the poor. The investigative authorities concluded that, in form, the Ministry of Healths document containing such information belongs to the state secret category. Therefore they propose the prosecution.
Through the information available in the media, we see that journalist Lan Anhs alleged violation, if any, is very minor compared to the benefits that her series of articles brings to the Vietnamese population.
We, the Vietnamese who wish to enjoy a healthy health care system, the press professionals and the supporters of the Vietnamese press, together sign this Petition to express our belief that the Vietnamese government will treat journalist Lan Anh objectively and fairly.
We wish that the case against Lan Anh will be examined under the principle that the Peoples interest is the utmost.
We also believe that journalist Lan Anh will be treated fairly so that all thirteen thousand Vietnamese journalists may see that they are protected by the law and encouraged by the government in raising their voice against corruption and negativism, contributing to the construction of a clean and strong national governing system.
