As it pertains to the construction of Newton North High School, 360 Lowell Avenue, Newton, Massachusetts.
Pursuant to City Charter Section 10-2, we, the undersigned voters of Newton, request a special public hearing regarding the cost of construction of Newton North High School.
Specifically, we request the Board to:
a) Establish a Guaranteed Maximum Price for the said project prior to the installation of foundations of the said school.
b) Establish a maximum cost of construction of the said project that, in the opinion of the honorable Aldermen, the city can afford without sacrificing the repair and construction of other public buildings.
The new Newton North High School project traveled from $104.5 to $141 to $151 to $154 to $171 million and keeps going. Alderman Sangiolo proposed to cap it at $175 million but if Mayor Cohen casts concrete foundations without Guaranteed Maximum Price, the cost of the project may go higher. This project is out of control. How much can Newton afford to pay for one school without hurting other schools, public buildings, services and programs?
