We the undersigned members of the NEIU community oppose the Army ROTC proposal at NEIU. The U.S. Military practices and policies are not consistent with the Statement of Values NEIU has to guide students, faculty and staff members. In particular, the U.S. Military policy on homosexuality (Do not ask, Do not tell) is contradictory to our commitment to diversity, which promotes the inclusion of a broad spectrum of students. We also believe that the U.S. Military is only seeking to use our campus, a Hispanic Serving Institution, as a recruitment tool to target poor and minority students. We represent a university community that promotes commitment to diversity on campus, but groups that go against diversity and exclude specific members on campus are not welcome to participate in the education of our student body.
