Whereas, large-scale US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) beach nourishment projects and other local projects involving offshore sand pumping along the east coast of the United States have had mixed results; and
Whereas, all such nourishment projects create artificial beaches that would destroy the natural look and feel of beaches on the Outer Banks of North Carolina; and
Whereas, USACE beach nourishment projects, and others, have failed to provide long-term protection against beach erosion; and
Whereas, USACE beach nourishment projects, and others, have cost hundreds of millions of dollars with only short-term, non-cost effective results; and
Whereas, USACE beach nourishment projects, and others, have been shown to have a detrimental impact on wildlife and ecological systems; and
Whereas, fifty year cost projections of a USACE beach nourishment project for the Outer Banks now exceeds $1.6 billion; and
Whereas, the northern Outer Banks beaches are one of the last remaining natural seashores along the entire east coast of the United States,
We, the undersigned residents of and visitors to the Outer Banks, oppose a USACE beach nourishment project or any local or state project that includes extensive pumping of off-shore sand upon the beaches in northern Dare County, NC.
