Recently, the Canadian Department of Justice announced $56 million in new programming geared at 'eradicating instances of racism in Canada.' One aspect of this new programming will assist with the compilation of a database of racist internet sites and investigation into issues surrounding the perpetuation of racial stereotyping and ethnic profiling. The State of Canada preaches multi-cultural tolerance, yet the place of indigenous peoples within this society has been ignored, with little tolerance provided where our differences exist. This has resulted in an increase in racism and negativity geared toward people of indigenous decent. The advancement of technology and the introduction of the internet provide even more ways for the racist to convey their hurtful messages. It is time that those in a position to assist practice the doctrine they preach.
One such blatant example of racial stereotyping and ethnic insensitivity and dehumanization of indigenous peoples can be found on the Alberta based website: Brocket 99 www.brocket99.com and www.brocket99.ca/pictures.html. This site is a disgusting display of the basest, racist rhetoric, which touts to parody the 'real life trials' of indigenous people within Canada, yet does no more than demean, disrespect and nauseate the many proud Nishnawbe peoples who struggle everyday against the stereotypes being perpetuated by owner/operator Michael Anthony. This website, the products and indeed Mr. Anthony must be stopped from continuing to promote this brand of humour on the internet for profit.
Signatories to said petition agree to act as advocates for indigenous peoples, pledging to assist with the discontinuation of Brocket 99, thereby ceasing the continued racial and ethnic discrimination against indigenous people everywhere.
To this end, the indigenous peoples residing within these North American borders would like to make it known to Michael Anthony, owner and operator of Brocket 99 that we, as indigenous people will no longer tolerate his brand of humour and the website he advocates which serves only to demean and disrespect us as the indigenous peoples of North America. All nations should unite in attempt to stop this type of web based racism.
