We the undersigned residents of the Tri-Cities are against the building of the 178,587-square-foot Wal-Mart Supercenter proposed at the southwest corner of 172nd Avenue and Comstock Street in Grand Haven. We believe that Wal-Mart will take away from our beautiful area instead of adding to it. We believe that major studies and long-term research have shown that Wal-Mart stores across the country suck up the local economy without helping it to prosper, and we strongly request that Wal-Mart not be allowed to move here and do the same. This store will have detrimental effects on the surrounding community, including increased traffic on already stressed streets, harm to local businesses, and a negative impact on our small-town community. As residents of Grand Haven, Spring Lake, and Ferrysburg we are concerned about the long term implications of this retail development on the economic and social health of our community. We ask that the Wal-Mart not be built at this location out of concern for our beautiful city, its people and its heritage.
