TO: SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS
We the undersigned feel obliged to express our frustration and disappointment with the performance of Petersburg City Schools while under the guidance of Superintendent Hamlin.
For many graduates, former teachers, retired administrators, and current students and staff, the Petersburg City Schools hold a very special place in our hearts. That feeling comes from the many wonderful experiences, dedicated employees and hard fought successes of the past. While the city schools have taken two steps forward in some areas. They have taken two steps backwards in others. The net gain is still zero and Petersburg City School Division is still the only school division in the state not to have a single school accredited.
Last spring or early summer Mr. Hamlin was fired. Weeks later, there was an appeal to reinstate him, but this appeal and his reinstatement were made before the Petersburg Schools SOL test results were known.
During Mr. Hamlins tenure, the Virginia Department of Educations data clearly show that Petersburg City Schools have not demonstrated a consistent improvement in performance. For example, the one school that was accredited in 2004 lost its accreditation in 2005. Three elementary schools out of six have lost ground this year compared to last year. The high school and the two middle schools have shown no appreciable gains.
There is a serious disconnect between Mr. Hamlin and the community, the school board, the school employees and the students. This disconnect has very tangible and detrimental effects upon our children and the entire community. In your position as Petersburg School Board Members, we hope that our signatures attached will serve as notice that there is a considerable and growing populace who would like to see this change. We ask that the Petersburg School Board immediately vote to terminate Mr. Hamlin.
If the majority of the other school divisions in the state are passing the SOL tests, then Petersburg City Schools should be passing. Concerning our childrens future, there are no acceptable excuses for failure.
