Opposed to the Expansion of Arts and Letters

We are signing this petition in opposition to the proposed expansion of Urban Assembly Academy of Arts and Letters Middle School. We believe that the expansion to include grades K-5 would be a liability for District 13 for the following reasons:
The expansion will hamper the growth of PS 20 (with which it shares a building) just when that school is improving under the leadership of a fantastic new principal.
The expansion will make it next to impossible for students who attend other District 13 elementary schools to get a seat in the middle school.
District 13 currently offers many good elementary school options, and not as many good middle school options.
Non-zoned schools have a tendency to cream students, parents, and other resources from zoned public schools in a way we think is unfair.
District 13 families were not made aware of the possibility of the expansion early enough to participate in the process.
We hope that you will not approve a proposal that is opposed by the majority of parents who have children enrolled in District 13 elementary schools.
