We, the undersigned community members, leaders, and organizations from Palo Alto and the greater Peninsula, support the right and efforts of the City of Palo Altos temporary (hourly) workers to organize a union. We have heard these temporary workers stories and we empathize with their struggles. We value both the quality of services provided by the City, and the hundreds of workers who make these services possible.
The right to organize a union free of interference, intimidation, and restraint is well established. We anticipate full compliance with the workers right to organize. We also expect the Citys commitment to follow state law directing the City to recognize the union and begin bargaining when the workers submit their majority petition. We look forward to following this process one which affords the City of Palo Alto a unique opportunity to demonstrate its commitment not only to its employees, but also to its residents and the larger community.
