Based on discussions to this point, there has been no indication of formal long term training prior to the implementation of this program. Studies have shown that in order to implement a successful multi age classroom, extensive training is needed, as well as a change in standards of testing, textbooks, and teaching philosophies.
Additionally, there is no indication of additional support staff allocated to these classrooms. Success in a multi age classroom is shown to be most effective with a team teaching approach. Based on current discussions and staffing concerns, this seems to be unlikely.
There has been very little communication from administration on this matter. We are also very dissatisfied with this aspect of the proposal.
While in some cases the class sizes may be smaller in a multi age classroom, we feel that the educational and social needs of our children will suffer. This is not in the best interests of our children. Multi aged classrooms are available elsewhere in the Burlington Area School District in the form of a Montessori Classroom, but we, the undersigned, have chosen Winkler Elementary based on a traditional classroom setting, and oppose this change.
