Parker Avenue Land Swap

We the residents of River Heights - Fort Garry ask that 59 acres north of Parker Avenue consisting of forest, wetlands, and grasses be preserved as green space for the following reasons:
1. Natural Green Space. There are numerous old oak trees, and other unique species, including some of the last remaining wild lady slippers in Manitoba, that have been growing there for many generations. The old growth trees are home to numerous birds including a rare Swainsons hawk that returns and nests every year. The grasses, natural wetlands, marshes, and trees provide a refuge to many species of wildlife including deer and fox year round. The area is a very diverse and unique eco-system.
2. Historical Significance. Artifacts such as arrowheads and ancient hunting knives found in the area indicate that the area was used as an aboriginal campground and buffalo skinning site.
3. Present Significance: This space is currently used as an off leash dog park, neighborhood gardens, cycling trails, as well as cross-country ski trails in the winter. The green space contributes significantly to Winnipegs clean air reserve, and to Winnipegs natural beauty.
4. Future Significance. This is a natural prairie landscape, hosting a wide variety of flora and fauna, in the middle of the city which will be available to future generations of Winnipegers.
5. Townhouses do not fit into the neighborhood. If some of the land is to be developed it should only be developed as single family homes.
6. The residents of Fort Garry River Heights should be involved in an open and honest discussion regarding a transaction that will have the greatest effect on those same residents.
We the residents of River Heights - Fort Garry ask that you vote NO to the proposed land swap between the City of Winnipeg and Gem Equities until a reasonable, balanced, inclusive and thorough investigation is done to determine the best usage for the 59 acres north of Parker Avenue.
