FILIPINO AMERICAN MARKET: HELP IT GROW!
The Filipino American market has to grow. One sure way is to have a petition. This petition is by the more than 3,200,000 Filipino Americans whose yearly $4 B remittances to our Filipino relatives help the Philippines improve its economy.
As thousands know, there has been an increasing interest by retiring Filipino Americans to invest back in the Philippines. When they retire in the Philippines, they in effect enhances the growth of the Filpino American market.
Because investing involves visiting the purchased properties, these retiring Filipino Americans may not enjoy the best medical care when the medical need arises while in the Philippines. Therefore it is our desire that the US government allows the use of the medicare coverage by these retiring Filipino Americans as payment to the fees of those attending doctors, nurses and other medical professionals including costs of medicines and hospitalization.
Briefly, thousands of Filipino Americans have worked their entire lives in the US and contributed fully to the US medicare program. They look forward to the time that when they get sick, US medicare program will absolve them and free them from worries of health care.
These Filipino Americans are skeptical in retiring in the Philippines. The simple reason is because they know that their US medicare and private HMO plans are not acceptable in the Philippines. While it is true that the US medicare program is not honored outside the US by medical and health institutions, there are alternatives without necessarily returning to US just to avail it.
What are the alternatives? For one, Filipino American retirees can self-insure. A better self-insurance plan is one that will not only save him money, but also covers only the major medical costs which are essential in a desirable medicare coverage.
Another one is to make sure that he has an odd Medigap insurance rider in his foreign travel coverage. There are only few carriers that have this. But having one is a very good option.
But there is no better option than allowing Filipino Americans to be treated in the Philippines under his US medicare program.
It is ironic that linking and extending US medicare and private HMO medical plans to Filipino Americans into the Philippine health care system could actually save lots of money for the US medicare. How could it save money for the US medicare? It reduces the US medicare cost substantially because medical care is much less expensive in the Philippines, even when the doctors are trained in the United States.
In effect, the high medical costs in the United States provide a huge umbrella to kill any effort to promote the idea of extending medicate as better alternative arrangements outside the country. That is the basic reason why there has never been a slight effort put into lobbying for US to extend medicare to those Filipino Americans intending to retire in the Philippines.
It is conceded that replacing Medicare isnt easy or free. While it can be done, its still the largest single obstacle to retiring in the Philippines. Retirees are confronted with the need to return to the United States if they have a long-term medical problem or a major emergency. That is a big obstacle and can be an expensive proposition.
