We, the undersigned citizens of Pennsylvania, are concerned about the nursing shortage in our Commonwealth healthcare facilities.

We see nurses working harder and harder to meet even the basic needs of their patients. We see nurses working longer and longer hours without adequate breaks. We see nurses struggling to give the kind of care they want to give and the kind of care we need as patients and families of patients.

We ask that the State Board of Nursing issue an advisory to nurses and their employers urging that nurses be allowed to use their own best judgment in their abilities to carry out mandatory overtime assignments. No one should be forced to work hours past their scheduled shifts when in their best judgment they are too fatigued.

We also ask the Board to reaffirm that nurses are not in danger of losing their nursing licenses by being charged with abandoning their patients when they make the choice to trust their judgment in taking the rest they need to give us as patients and families of patients the best and safest care we need all 24 hours of each day.

482. Marlene M | mandation will only cause more nurses to leave the profession. I believe the only way to correct the shortage is to make nursing a good financial choice for students. They look at the options, the hours, working condictions, the liability, weekends, holid
