Petition for Constructive Alternative to the Proposed Extension of the DCC Liquor Ban

We, the undersigned recognize that while there are clear harms associated with binge drinking there are more constructive alternatives than the extension of the Liquor Ban across much of North Dunedin. These include the implementation of initiatives to deal directly with the causes and effects of binge drinking and alcohol over-consumption. These possible initiatives include putting free food and water at public events such as the Hyde St Keg Party and the placement of glass bottle depots at end of student streets. A public liquor ban across much of North Dunedin will do nothing but force the drinking indoors – the unintended consequences could include injuries due to overcrowded flat parties. Therefore we call for the implementation for these constructive alternatives rather than the implementation of a near North-Dunedin wide Public liquor ban.
