To the Writers of Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda:
This petition is to implore you to take on the difficult task of showing on screen some of the workings and complexities of Nietzchean Matriarchy in the context of the Andromeda Universe.
Matriarchy is really difficult to write, especially for a culture whose representative is male (Tyr). We see glimpses here and there, but they only relate to how we see the Matriarchy impact our main character (ex. Freya's choice. Olma's overriding Guderian, possibly Elsbett's half-hearted offer to Tyr).
That said...I would like to strongly urge the writers to make the attempt. Lets face it. This is a sci-fi show! The whole beauty of sci-fi in general, and Gene Roddenberry shows in particular, is that we are given a glimpse into other realities, and given an opportunity to understand new possibilities.
In making the Nietzchean culture matriarchal, and putting such a strong male as its representative, a unique opportunity is here for the taking - one that wasn't taken in DS9 for example (I'm thinking of the episode where an offshoot of Bajorans show up, being a totally matriarchal society, with their men almost totally childish, and women in the position of oppressor.). We have an opportunity to explore the idea of feminine power without emasculating the male. We have an opportunity of exploring the ways in which the world can be different if it truly catered to the needs of women. We have an opportunity to say something about the world we live in today, by looking at a world that doesn't exist.
I think that this is the calling of science fiction writing, and I am imploring the writers of Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda not to pass up the chance.
