Petition on Strengthening Democracy and the restoration of adequate resources to the Opposition
To the Honourable House of Assembly of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador in parliament assembled
The petition of the undersigned residents Humbly sheweth
Whereas a strong opposition is an essential part of a healthy functioning democracy,
Whereas it is unfair and unreasonable to increase funding for the government caucus but deny adequate funding for the opposition caucus,
Whereas the funding available to the opposition caucus in this province is far below what is allocated in other provinces,
Whereas the duties of the official opposition are vital to democracy and require significant levels of research and policy development,
Whereas an independent review of the caucus finances recommended fair levels of funding for the opposition caucus and the Green Report recognizes the importance of fair treatment of opposition members,
Whereupon the undersigned, your petitioners, call upon all members of the House of Assembly to urge government to strengthen the democratic process by implementing the recommendations of the independent report on caucus resources.
And as is duty bound your petitioners will ever pray.
