PETITION TO ABOLISH THE GENERAL MEDICAL COUNCIL UK

For centuries the General Medical Council has ruled doctors. They were created following the enactment of the Medical Act.

The statutory instruments within the GMC created by Parliament should ensure that those who run the GMC should follow the procedures.
Over the years, injustices have been meted out on doctors. The route of appeal for any doctor tried at the General Medical Council is narrow.
Most injustices remain hidden within the General Medical Council's vault without the oxygen of publicity.

As the years have gone by, the General Medical Council have been taken over by those who remain nothing more than incompetent clerks. These incompetent clerks have denied thousands of doctors their livelihoods. In addition, it is an established fact that the GMC is incapable of running a fair trial. The case GMC v BBC established that the General Medical Council is not a court.

Moreover, the Public Policy Institute Study into the GMC's conduct procedures found there were many flaws.

The summary can be found on http://www.psi.org.uk/news/pressrelease.asp?news_item_id=24 .

The Shipman Inquiry criticised the GMC repeatedly http://www.the-shipman-inquiry.org.uk/5r_page.asp?ID=4804 . The main problems being the lack of compliance with procedures and the lack of transparency.

For many years, the General Medical Council have taken subscriptions from doctors ( currently increasing by the year) and used their hard earned finances to fund pointless litigation. The GMC is currently running into a deficit. Moreover, it should be noted that in the case R Pal v GMC, Sarah Bedwell, Peter Lynn and Catherine Green, they spent in excess of 82,000 to keep defamatory memos. Over the years, the General Medical Council have assassinated many livelihoods while colluding with the Department of Health and the Trusts.

It continues to violate the human rights of doctors and patients alike. The doctor is cited as guilty before a hearing or a judgment. This is against the case law in Belmarsh. Junior doctors are hardly represented by defence unions. The General Medical Council has in the past forced doctors to go to trial without legal representation Phipps v GMC.

The GMC is accountable to parliament at present. We as the medical profession are of the view that the General Medical Council can no longer function in its current state. An alternative body should be set up to ensure fairness and transparency for all those who are on trial and patients who complain. The two independent studies - Shipman Inquiry and Public Policy Institute has established that the General Medical Council has no future in medicine.

We would be grateful if you could sign your name to our petition with any comments you wish to make.

Regards

Dr Rita Pal
