Petition to Ayatollah Sistani to Support the Green Movement of Iran

TO: His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Ali Hussein Al-Sistani
WE THE UNDERSIGNED hereby Petition His Eminence Grand Ayatollah Sistani to support the Green Democratic movement led by Mir Hossein Mousavi, to demand the release of all political prisoners, and to condemn the illegitimate government of Ahmadinejad.
Mr. Mousavi and his supporters had complained of widespread voting fraud and irregularities in the 10th election of the Islamic Republic of Iran. When the government ignored their protests, Mr. Mousavi and his supporters started peaceful street demonstrations denouncing the violation of voters rights and election fraud. The government started to utilize violent methods in order to crush the demonstrations and instill fear within the people. Armed police guards started beating innocent men, women, and children on the streets with batons, clubs, and metal pipes. There are also incidences of shooting at unarmed civilians by the Revolutionary Guards and Basij armed with guns, leading to the deaths of many individuals (the exact amount has not been released by the government). In one case, the death of Sohrab Arabi, the government authorities did not allow the parents to see their son and lied to them that he was in prison, even though he had been dead for almost one month.
The government also began to arrest individuals whom they suspected of voicing dissent. These individuals range from former vice presidents, cabinet ministers, college professors, clerics, journalists, and students. Over 1000 individuals have been arrested without any formal charge and are not allowed access to their lawyers or family members. There have also been claims of torture and abuse by government authorities in order to force the political prisoners to confess to crimes against the regime.
Mr. Mousavi, his supporters, and all the political prisoners are Shia Muslims, who follow in the path of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), Imam Ali (A.S.), and the Ahlul Beyt, which is the path of righteousness. Every night from the rooftops, the shouts of Allaho Akbar (God is Great) can be heard by the supporters of Mr. Mousavi. The authorities have sent out citations to homes asking the people to immediately stop chanting God is Great or be faced with arrest.
How can a government that preaches Islamic values, exhibit actions that violate the teachings of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) and are the opposite of those same values?
