It has most likely come to the attention of everybody recently that the Kansas School Board is attempting to have the theory of "Intelligent Design" taught in their public school's Science classes. Allowing this to be done would be a poor decision on several levels. First, whereas the theory goes out of it's way NOT to mention a particular deity or designer, it can be discovered with little research that most commonly the I.D. theory is referring to the Christian God. If I am not mistaken, is it not illegal to teach religion in public schools? Then Intelligent Design should not be taught in public school, as it is just religion masquerading as science. Furthermore, and an even greater insult to myself and the scientific community, this "theory" is to be taught in Science class. Intelligent Design is not science, not by a long shot. In science, you can not say that because something is so complex, it was created by some 'Intelligent Designer'. This theory, at its most basic, is just creationism attempting to disguise itself as a scientific theory. Intelligent Design needs to be kept out of public schools, and science classes, not only in Kansas but throughout the entire public school system of the United States. This petition has been addressed to the U.S. Department of Education in the hopes that the fine people there may recognize this threat to their school systems and deal with it accordingly. Those who sign this petition recognize that the theory of Intelligent Design has no place in science class, and should not be included as part of a public school curriculum.
