Petition to Oppose the Proposed Biodigester on Wilson Road in Fairfield Township, Madison County, Ohio
We, the undersigned residents and concerned members of Fairfield Township and Madison County, Ohio, strongly urge local authorities to reject the proposed biodigester facility on Wilson Road. While we acknowledge the importance of renewable energy initiatives, this particular project raises profound concerns regarding public health, safety, and environmental protection. These worries include potential air and water pollution, excessive truck traffic, threats to a valued community bike path, and the heightened risk of fires and explosions.
1. Air Quality and Odor Concerns
Biodigesters rely on decomposing organic materials to produce biogas, a process that can release several harmful compounds such as methane, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Despite mitigation strategies, there is still a tangible risk of air contamination. Moreover, persistent odors could permeate Fairfield Township’s open landscape, diminishing the overall quality of life for those who live, work, and study in the vicinity.
2. Public Health Risks
Long-term exposure to gases like methane and hydrogen sulfide may cause respiratory issues, headaches, nausea, and potential neurological damage. VOCs further exacerbate these risks. Situating the biodigester near residential areas and educational institutions unnecessarily endangers both vulnerable groups and the wider community.
3. Waterway Protection
The planned location lies close to Big Darby and Little Darby Creeks—both recognized as National Scenic Rivers and critical to the region’s ecosystem. Any leak, runoff, or spill from the biodigester could pollute these vital waterways, endangering aquatic habitats, recreational opportunities, and sources of drinking water.
4. Escalated Truck Traffic
Operating a biodigester involves significant transportation of organic materials, leading to an influx of heavy truck traffic on Wilson Road and other local routes. These rural roads are not built for intensive industrial use, creating a greater risk of roadway damage, accidents, elevated noise levels, and disruptions for residents. Such a spike in heavy vehicle traffic also undermines the peaceful, rural character of Fairfield Township.
5. Impact on the Community Bike Path
A community bike path near the proposed site would be adversely affected by the increased truck traffic, noise, and odors. Heavy vehicles passing frequently pose safety hazards and diminish the appeal of outdoor activities along the path, potentially reducing the sense of community and well-being that the path currently provides.
6. Elevated Fire and Explosion Risks
Community members have voiced apprehensions about possible fires or explosions related to the storage of flammable biogas like methane. Given that Fairfield Township relies on contracted fire services located outside the township, any major incident would face a delayed emergency response, putting residential, commercial, and natural areas (including the Darby Creeks) at increased risk.
7. Ohio House Bill 193 – Strengthening Local Oversight
Ohio House Bill 193 is under consideration to reinforce local authority in regulating facilities like biodigesters. If passed, this legislation will grant Fairfield Township and other local governments expanded power to safeguard their communities. We firmly believe Fairfield Township officials must use this authority to prevent the establishment of a biodigester that poses clear risks to our region.
8. Likelihood of Accidents
Biodigesters are intricate operations requiring stringent protocols to avoid malfunctions. Failures in equipment or oversight can lead to uncontrolled releases of hazardous gases or dangerous explosions. Placing this type of facility near homes, schools, and sensitive ecological areas is an unnecessary gamble with public safety.
In Summary
Although we support renewable energy solutions, the risks attached to placing a biodigester on Wilson Road—including air and water contamination, amplified truck traffic, public health hazards, and heightened disaster potential—are simply too great for Fairfield Township to bear. With the imminent possibility of increased local authority under House Bill 193, we implore both the Fairfield Township Trustees and the Madison County Planning Commission to reject this proposal and protect our community’s well-being.
By signing below, we call on our local leaders to prioritize the health, safety, and environmental integrity of Fairfield Township and dismiss the proposed Wilson Road biodigester.
