On 4th July 2005 John William Kerfoot brutally murdered his partner of 8 years Janet Kilty in front of their five year old son. In a standoff that lasted 6 hours. Kerfoot strangled, beat and stabbed Ms Kilty 15 times forcing the boy to watch. During that time he continued to impose wounds on her whilst the child desperately tried to stop the bleeding with his bare hands. John barricaded himself into the family home using furniture and made numerous telephone calls to family threatening to kill the boy. It was later told in court that Kerfoot held the knife used to kill his mother to the innocent child's throat whilst making these threats.
In August 2006 John Kerfoot was acquitted of murder on the grounds of diminished responsibility and was charged with manslaughter. He received an indefinite sentence (meaning he can be released as and when he is deemed 'safe') and filed his first appeal for parole in 2008. He is eligible to apply for parole on an annual basis. At the time of her murder, Janet was also the mother of two older girls, ages eighteen and twenty one.
It is the wish of Janets family that no other families are made to suffer such a loss at the hands of John Kerfoot. A person who could so callously and viciously murder someone he professed to love, is capable of doing the same thing or worse if given the opportunity. Morality cannot be legislated nor rehabilitated. Because of his depraved indifference to human life, we, the undersigned request you deny John Kerfoot's early release from prison.
This is an opinion petition and as such can be signed by any person of any age living in any country. If you agree, please sign this petition and forward it to as many others as you know. It is ongoing and will be presented to the parole board on every occasion Kerfoot is up for parole.
