Petition to request broadcast of the Eurovision Song Contest on CBC

Whereas the Eurovision Song Contest has held continuouly since 1956, and
Whereas it has been viewed by millions not only in Europe but also around the world, and
Whereas the contest has launched the careers of global superstars such as ABBA, and
Whereas the contest has featured musicians who have made the Canadian hit parade such as Katrina and the Waves, Cliff Richard, Sandie Shaw, and Lulu, and
Whereas Canadian Celine Dion won the competition in 1988, singing Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi for Switzerland, and
Whereas Canadian Natasha St Pier, born in New Brunswick, came fourth in the 2001 Eurovision Song Contest singing Je n'ai que mon âme for France, and
Whereas thanks to the international platform provided by the Eurovision Song Contest, many of the acts follow the contest with concert tours that include Canadian concert and festival dates, and
Whereas beyond performers, other talent, including song-writers and presenters (the 2011 co-host, Anke Engelke was born in Montreal) have Canadian roots, and
Whereas as a nation of immigrants, Canada has an audience familiar with the contest, and
Whereas as an associate member of the European Broadcasting Union (the organizers of the Contest), Canada's CBC could broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest, and the programme has been shown in Canada in the past,
We the undersigned petition the CBC and Radio Canada to broadcast this year's competeion to be held on 18 May 2013 in Malmö, Sweden
