Dear Ms. Buckery:

As you know, usable open, play space for a wide range of ages is hard to come by in various Brooklyn neighborhoods. For over 15 years individuals and families of P.S. 152, P.S. 315 and South Midwood, Flatbush have advocated for such viable play space to be developed on land that has been under New York City Department of Education (DOE) jurisdiction, left vacant and under-utilized for the same period of time. Finally, in December 2004, the New York City Council approved a $30 million dollar expenditure for a new science annex (for Midwood High School) and a playground (for P.S. 152 and P.S. 315) on the property located on Glenwood Road between Bedford Avenue and East 23rd Street. Unfortunately, you have elected to limit the playground apparatus to be installed in the school yard to early childhood-age children -- for issues of safety and liability.

At a time when Congress has called upon schools, families and communities to provide our children with more opportunities for daily exercise (in order to offset a near epidemic of child obesity rates in the U.S.), it is IMPERATIVE that all new public school playgrounds expand, not limit children's play options during and after school. In addition, many research studies have shown physical exercise is a crucial component to healthy child development.

In fact, there are many new and renovated public school playgrounds throughout New York City that do provide play apparatus for Pre-K through 5th grade -- often with fencing that separates the younger children from the older play activities. If this can happen in schools all over the City, why not at P.S. 152 and P.S. 315 in Region 6?

We urge you to support our proposal to install play apparatus for both Pre-K through 2nd graders AND 3rd through 5th graders in the P.S. 152/P.S. 315 playground. All our children and those who will follow deserve the basic right to play and to learn and be healthy through play.

Thank you for your consideration.
