Your Exellency, Dr. Bashar Al Assad, President of Syria:
My name is Abdul Naser Arab. I'm from Damascus, Syria, where I owned a medical laboratory.
After the death of Hafiz Al Assad in 2000, a statue depicting him with his son Basil was smeared with faeces and finally decapitated. As my laboratory was very close to this location, I was accused of being responsable by the Syrian secret police. The faeces and blood samples - I had to work with in my laboratory - were used as evidence against me.
They sentenced me to three years imprisonment: The first year I was kept in very cruel solitary confinement and I was frequently tortured. I was beaten, hang-up and they used a drilling machine to bore through my heels.
After I was released, I tried to get in touch with Bashar Al Assad in his office. I wanted to tell him that I had been innocent all the time, that I had been wrongfully convicted of a crime, which I had not commited and had been tortured in prison.
I finally got an appointment on 8 September 2003. When I was leaving my house on that day, the secret police attempted to kill me. They hit me with a car that seriously, that still today I can only walk with crutches.
December 2004 I was able to flee from Syria to Germany to seek asylum and medical treatment.
Beginning of April 2005, I sent faxes to Bashar Al Assad and the Syrian Ministry of the Interior, to General Gazy Kanan, to tell them my story in every detail. Until end of May 2005, I haven't got a response, as I believe that the secret police intercepted my faxes.
Therefore I take this unusual step to publish my petition online and I hope that now they get the chance to read my letters/ faxes.
Your Excellency Dr. Bashar Al Assad,
I seek your help for me and other countrymen, who had to flee our homeland and are innocent as I am. Please help me to return to Syria in safety. I am innocent of all charges they held against me.
I claim compensation for the agony I had to bear. Again I would like to ask you for your support and backing. Not only for me, but also for all our countrymen, who were and still are imprisoned had and still have to bear torture for years. Like them I need the chance to return in safety to our beloved Syria.
