Policy: Dependents of MNPS Employees
MNPS employees who have dependent children of school age shall be allowed to enroll their children at the school where the employee is assigned. The parent is responsible for filling out the appropriate forms within the allotted time frame set by MNPS stating the reason(s) for the request. This does not apply to children of employees who are assigned to academic magnet schools or Nashville School of the Arts (TCA 49-6-3113) (b) (1).
School age students of MNPS employees who reside outside Davidson County may attend the school to which the parent is assigned, subject to filing the appropriate request for transfer form as prescribed by the MNPS Board of Education (TCA 49-6-3113; TCA 49-6-3104; TCA 49-6-3105). The parent is responsible for filing the appropriate application within the allotted time frame set by MNPS stating the reason(s) for the request. This does not apply to children of employees who are assigned to academic magnet schools or Nashville School of the Arts.
***Upon carefully studying the wording of our current policy it seems exclusionary, and I feel it discriminates against those of us that teach in the academic magnet program. Were it the policy for all magnet schools, I would undoubtedly not question the fairness. However, it explicitly singles out only teachers at Meigs, Hume-Fogg, Martin Luther King, and Nashville School of the Arts. Granted, I know that each of these schools has a limited number of openings which tend to be greatly coveted by the Nashville community. However, if a teacher's child qualifies for one of these programs, it seems that they should be included in the policy the district has regarding children of employees. Furthermore, since Head is now a feeder school for Martin Luther King, teachers who work there are guaranteed a place in the magnet program if their children qualify during their time at Head.
