We, the undersigned, residents, property owners, and tax payers of the Town of Washington, request that you adopt a Town of Washington Wetlands Ordinance to protect and preserve our irreplaceable water supply and wetlands.
We believe that the Town of Washington must have a wetlands and watercourses law that adequately protects our drinking-water aquifers, streams, ponds, lakes, marshes and vernal pools and the embankments adjacent to these wetlands and watercourses, where vegetation must remain undisturbed. The ordinance must have proper maps so residents and officials will know where these areas are located.
In addition, watersheds must be wisely managed to preserve topsoil, avoid silting of watercourses and diminish the risk of floods. We wish this protection to ensure our access to abundant, clean drinking water, to preserve our verdant landscape and to protect the many forms of life that depend on our streams and wetlands.
It is essential that the Town of Washington now adopt a Wetlands Ordinance that meets or exceeds all of these requirements.
Existing state laws do not achieve the breadth of protections envisioned here. We realize that the protection we request may discourage some inappropriate forms of residential and commercial development, and in this way impose costs on some land speculators and developers, but the costs to the entire community of not having an adequate wetlands and watercourses law are real, exceedingly high, long lasting and unacceptable
