When any criminal cases are completed, it is essential that we have a full, open, Public Inquiry into the hacking of phones by the News of the World (and any other media outlets) in order that the crimes, abuses and gross breaches of people's privacy are comprehensively investigated and conclusions drawn as to how to ensure that this never happens again. The media are a distinct part of the policy community of this country and they too must be properly held to account - especially in the face of clear evidence that they arrogantly assumed for many years that they were above both the law and common decency. A properly constituted Public Inquiry is the best way to do this as voluntary arrangements such as the Press Complaints Commission have proved completely toothless.
