By signing up to this petition I am expressing concerns about the possible negative effects that the creation of a Free School in Swanage will have upon the overall education provision in Purbeck.
I question the bizarre decision of the DfE to approve a preliminary proposal for a Free School in Swanage, particularly as the DfE's own Office for School Adjudication determination of 28 November 2001, fully upheld the decisions and process made by Dorset County Council's Purbeck Review of school provision.
I wish to express my concern that the Consultation exercise undertaken by the Education Swanage proposing group made little effort to illicit the views of stakeholders in the broader Purbeck area, and that the poor response rate of 4.1% (6000 leaflets delivered in Swanage only, but only 245 responses) makes the report statistically invalid.
I am concerned that the re-creation of 400 surplus secondary school places in Purbeck is the most effective use of educational funding in these times of supposed austerity.
I request that the Secretary of Sate for Education fully considers these points before committing to a Funding Agreement for an unnecessary Free School that could create unhealthy competition between secondary schools, when what is really needed is a spirit of collaboration between all stakeholders to make education in Purbeck the excellent standard that our students deserve.
