We ask the Controller of BBC Radio 3 to consider the recent changes at Radio 3. Loyal listeners are tuning out, and the reasons we are doing so include:
• The "dumbing down" of Radio 3 to an entertainment station merely punctuated by music, rather than one which seeks to promote an understanding and enjoyment of serious music
• A general change in style of presentation to relentlessly upbeat, with unstructured and often irrelevant chatter
• An increasing trend to play parts of whole pieces of music, rather than the whole, with the emphasis on popular, undemanding classics
• Subjecting listeners to other peoples’ thoughts and opinions via listener phone-ins and "celebrity" guests, who often know little or nothing about music.
In addition to the above, we ask the controller to take a more catholic approach to drawing in new audiences (without alienating the others).
This can be done by building on the things which are still great at Radio 3: Composer of the Week, In Tune, early music shows, and live recording from Festivals. These are all good models for how music can be presented, with more World Music, jazz, and serious contemporary music.
In short, we just want MUSIC, not chatter, celebrities or entertainment. And more of it – uninterrupted! If you agree with ANY of the above, please sign now!
