It is not 'definately', nor 'definaytely', nor 'defin8ly' ... with the emphasis on the 'ayt' element.
This is not an attempt to stifle the evolution of local accent or language variation, more of a wake up call that this word indicates such precision that its spelling should be equally so regarded in spelling ... which is now coming about via the mispronunciation usually uttered via the media by Glasgow-centric interviewees .. particularly on the radio and in connection with football.
This is not an attempt to attack football nor Glasgow, but more out of frustration that more and more, the word is being misspelled as the result of exposure to hearing the word being constantly mispronounced in that annoying way.
Lets protect our children from such influence which may cause them doubt as to how they spell the word DEFINITELY by insisting that mispronunciation can only be broadcast after the watershed, and that an on the spot fine of an amount which the culprit can DEFINITELY not afford, can be imposed fat any time for mispronunciation in a public place.
