Referendum on Reforming or Abolishing the Canadian Senate

Objective:  To petition the Canadian Government to hold a referendum on whether the Senate should be abolished or reformed.  To let it be known to the party in power that Canadians do not want them to unilaterally reform the Senate without giving the electorate the opportunity to vote on whether they prefer to have the Senate abolished. A referendum gives those who are eligible a chance to vote (yes or no) to a specific question of political importance. Function of Senate: One of the purposes of the Canadian Senate in our Political System is to review "Bills" pasted on to it from the House of Commons. The "Bills" have already been given three readings by our elected officials in the House of Commons and they have debated it, voted on it, and given it a thorough review. The Senate's further review and examination of the "Bills" is supposed to provide a measure of quality control befor a "Bill" is givin Royal Assent and becomes Canadian Law. There are over 100 non-elected Senators who are appointed by the Governor General on the reommendation of the Prime Minister to conduct these reviews.  Rational for Referendum: Many Canadian are frustrated with the apparent lack of quality control they are currently seeing in the spending habits of some senators. They are also aware of the staggering amount of taxpayers' dollars being spent to maintain the Senate. Many have expressed their frustration online at being unable to bring about a change with respect to the Senate. It is time to pressure the government to hold a referendum on whether to abolish or reform the Senate.
