We, the citizens of Virginia Beach, support Council Members Reba McClanan's and Bill DeSteph's call for the people to decide in a referendum whether the city should get into financing new home purchases by approving higher density housing developments and taking soft second deeds of trust.

Council Members McClanan and DeSteph correctly characterized City Council's adoption of the Work Force Housing ordinances as a back door end-run on the voters rejection of a redevelopment and housing authority last May by a 2 to 1 margin.

* There is more than adequate existing inventory of affordable homes for sale.

* The city is becoming a landlord, which is the housing authority you rejected.

* The city is in competition with you if you are selling your home for $350,000 or less.

* The issue is not affordable housing. The issue is additional housing densities for developers.

* If you live west of Rosemont Road, this plan is to replace your homes and businesses with high density, mixed-use developments.

Therefore, we, the undersigned, petition the City Council of Virginia Beach to rescind the work force housing ordinances adopted on Tuesday, August 28, 2007. Furthermore, City Council should approve a resolution at its Tuesday, September 4, 2007 meeting to put the question on whether or not the city should adopt a work force housing program on the November 6, 2007 ballot.
