The Dublin Branch of Down syndrome Ireland
We strongly object to the shameful proposal in the most recent Budget to cut by fifty
percent the Disability Allowance for 18 -24 year olds. We are campaigning for this vital
payment to be reinstated as it was before the Budget.
We would be very grateful if you would get as many signatures as possible, from family,
friends, colleagues and clubs to support our campaign to have this cut reversed.
Feel free to photocopy this petition form.
Following the public outcry to this proposal, the government has said that it was “paused” and that it will “review” and “revisit” the proposal.
On the Social Welfare website it states: “Budget measures which provided
for changes in the conditions and rates for payment of Disability Allowance
are not being introduced as planned, pending a review.
The government has never said the cut will be “reversed” as we had been led to believe.
To equate young adults with a disability to able bodied job seekers shows a complete lack of understanding of what it means to have and live with a disability. It is grossly insulting to them and their families. The options available to able bodied job seekers often aren’t available for people with disabilities.
This payment gives them the chance to have a better quality of life and provides them with some independence and choices.
Thank you for your support.
