Revision of GW Housing Program and Risk Management policies.
1. GW Housing Program and Risk Management should understand the needs of various world cultures and religions in the housing community.
A. Prohibiting the possession of a rice cooker in the dormitory rooms.
a. Asian students eat rice as a staple in traditional cooking and foods.
b. A rice cooker is not available in the kitchen that Asian students can use.
c. A rice cooker should be made available to students, or said students be given permission to possess such in the rooms.
B. Prohibiting other utensils.
a. Jewish and Muslim students cannot share utensils which might have been used to prepare pork.
b. Students should be allowed to possess utensils for specific use in the kitchen such as toaster ovens for pork.
2. GW Housing Program and Risk Management should protect studentsЇ privacy.
A. Inspection without notice
a. This procedure is not respectful of studentsЇ privacy.
b. Other universities, such as MIT and New York State University, give notice of housing inspections by email. This notice gives students sensitive about their property and privacy time to set aside for the inspection.
c. The inspection team should not have the right to remove prohibited items since they are studentsЇ property but rather give students a warning as the other schools do.
d. A fair warning should be given to students prior to inspection.
3. GW Housing Program and Risk Management should research more about prohibited items such as the rice cooker.
A. Rice cookers are not fire hazards.
a. If coffee makers and irons are safe in the dormitory rooms, rice cookers are safe too.
b. A rice cooker can only potentially cause a fire when used with attachments or accessories that are not recommended or sold by its manufacturer.
c. In fact, recent improvements in the designs of rice cookers are made in such ways that separating the body and the plug is impossible.
d. Distinguish more sensitively between what to take away and what to allow.
