S.O.S Grounding on Rotuma Reef

It has been seven (7) weeks since the MV Bulou Ni Ceva grounded on a fringing reef in Rotuma on June 14, 2006. To date, approximately 30,000 liters of oil and fuel are still on board the boat. The risk of an oil leak to Rotumas closed reef system will not only impact the marine ecosystem which is an important source of fisheries and livelihood of about 1360 people residing on the island but poses a threat to its marine biodiversity.

Rotumans on the island have not the knowledge, equipment nor technical expertise to deal with a potential environment disaster. We request the assistance of government in pressuring the ship owners and all relevant authorities to:
(1) Remove all oil, fuel and contaminants of the M.V. Bulou Ni Ceva immediately.
(2) Remove the shipwreck from the Rotuma reef.

As the situation in Rotuma is one that could have easily happened on any one of our Fiji islands, and that grounded ships or boats poses enormous threats to the environment and the livelihood of island communities, we urge you to participate in this petition.
