18 year old Mohammad Reza Haddadi who was arrested at the age of 15 for committing murder is now sentenced to death, according to the decision confirmed by the legal system of the country in Shiraz, Iran.
Mohammad Rezas family live in a miserable situation. His father left the family 15 years ago and got married to two women other than Mohammad Rezas mother. None of his three wives ever filed for divorce.
Mohammad Rezas mother does hard physical labour to be able to take care of her eight children (Mohammad Reza and his seven siblings) and is currently disabled as a result of three severe strokes. One of Mohammad Rezas brothers is not able to move his leg and arm due to a serious handicap. One of his sisters, who divorced and returned to her mothers home with a child after finding out that her husband was a married man with eight children from his first wife. This sister is extremely dependent on Mohammad Reza emotionally and could not stand hearing the news that her brother will be executed. Consequently, she lost her control suddenly and tried to commit suicide by putting herself on fire. She took oil from the heating system of the house. Her mother tried to save her, but since their house is located in a very narrow and isolated alley, they couldnt access a car. 70\% of her body burned as a result of a delay in delivering her to the hospital.
Mohammad Rezas father who introduces himself as an uneducated labourer who is the father of 14 children and has no help in the world except from the merciful God, claims that he has witnessed his son being beaten cruelly by a cable for 12 continuous hours, to confess for a crime he did not commit.
He wishes that God would have mercy in the hearts of the family of the person whom the court believes Mohammad Reza killed. He hopes they will forgive his son, considering the fact that Mohammad Reza is not a murderer. He was involved in a stupid crime as a result of poverty and a miserable situation. Both Mohammad Rezaz parents have repeatedly visited the victims family to ask for their mercy, but they refused with hate and anger and with the help of the police, forced them to leave their place.
Mohamad Reza accompanied a group of adult criminals while stealing a car that resulted in the death of ten drives. Mohammad Reza confessed in the court that he is the one who killed the driver, but after he was informed of the death penalty, he denied his first confession and claimed that the other criminals who had accompanied him convinced him to take the responsibility of the murder in return for money they claimed they would give to his family.
He believed that he would not be sentenced to death since he was under 18, but the court sentenced him to death for kidnapping and murder. The other accused received jail sentences for burning and hiding the corpse.
Mohammad Reza and his family believe that he has not committed the murder and his adult partners have betrayed him.
His lawyer states that forensic science has not found the accurate cause of the death but the court has considered it certain that the crime was committed by Mohammad Reza based on his confession that he denied later. He also claims that one of the criminals in his group promised him that his sister would marry Mohammad Reza if he confessed he committed the murder.
Neither Mohammad Rezas denial nor his partners later approval of his innocence could change the decision made by the fist court after his confession. His execution sentence was confirmed by the major loyal organization after he demanded for a reconsideration, despite the fact that Iran has joined some international agreements that prohibit the execution of people who committed crimes under the age of 18, including the convention of childrens rights.
Mohammad Reza spent seven years of the best period of his life in jail, with fear and imagination of being hanged, says Mohammad Rezas sister, I got divorced with a child for whom I am the only responsible parent, but the news about Mohammad Rezas execution was so shocking that I attempted suicide without thinking about my daughter. We understand the feeling of the victims family about losing one of their family members, but they already know the fact that he was a child and he really didnt commit that murder.
