We refute the statements made by Sheikh Achmat Sedick, secretary general of the Muslim Judicial Council as reported in the Sunday Times (August 1st 2004) that "Christmas, Easter and other religious holidays were legacies of apartheid and mainly reflected the priorities of the Dutch Reformed Church," but are fundamentals of the Christian Faith dating back to the birth of Jesus Christ, the Author and Finisher of our faith. These events are NOT legacies of apartheid and are central events to all Christians around the world.
That we as Christians would take great exception to the cancellation of Christmas and / or Easter as public holidays in what is predominantly a Christian country. Contrary to "The dean" of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, Bishop David Beetge, who said most South Africans would be disappointed if Christmas and Good Friday were tampered with, we would be extremely angry and would view such cancellations as an infringement of the basic rights of all Christians.
That "Government" is overstepping their mandate, as they are elected not to rule but to serve the people of the country, in that the decisions made by government should reflect the wish of the majority of the inhabitants of the country and not the ideals of a few elected officials.
