Sandy heath mountain bike area

Sandy Heath is a small area on the vast expanse which is on Hampstead Heath in London. The area has provided a haven for mountain bikers from the crowded city to cycle and relax. The site has always suffered problems with the council, who see the cyclists as a menace and a nuisance, but recently the council has stepped up his pressure with regular police patrols and heavy fines for trail digging and persistent offenders.

Corporation of london argue that the riders ruin the landscape of the heath and damage wildlife and plants, they also feel that the cyclists endanger walkers and dogs as they go about their sport. As a group we argue that the riders do little to harm nature and wildlife, the council appear to do more damage with their mini diggers (which they occasionally use to destroy the trails!) and 4x4 transport. The walkers and ramblers have the whole of the heath to enjoy and honestly do not need this small and insignificant piece of the heath, which is know to be used by cyclists.

This area of Hampstead previously had a large reputation for gay dogging, but the mountain bikers, through riding and building have cleared up the area and given the woods a much safer and easier atmosphere. Police time and Heath funds (which in the news are said to be very low) could also be used much better in policing criminals, rather than people trying to take part in a sport they love.

Mountain biking is a great sport which is becoming bigger and bigger in the UK and we feel that an area is needed to be enjoyed by people from the inner city. We hope you can support our cause and allow the haven and playground that sandy heath has been to remain. Even if it is as a small area set aside to mountain bikers.

238. Antony Hale | The Corporation of London can't stop the gay community using the Heath responsibly despite many initiatives over many years so why not give the mountain bikers a break and allow at least some of Sandy Heath to be used for some good non-sleazy fun.
