Save The Cedar Valley Conservation Area
The Cedar Valley Conservation Area is 101 acres of undeveloped naturally-treed land in north Oshawa with the Oshawa Creek meandering through it. The area has many walking trails and is used extensively by local residents throughout the year.
Until recently, it was a part of the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authoritys (CLOCAs) portfolio of conservation areas. This property was sold to you, the City of Oshawa in 2004. You, the City renamed the conservation area Cedar Valley Park, and have slated it for Oshawa Parks development. A portion has been sold for housing development.
The current Cedar Valley Park master plan calls for development of one of the last remaining natural areas in Oshawa by adding 10 foot wide asphalt paths through the entire area. This Cedar Valley Park master plan will be revisited every 5 years and can change to include Oshawa Park standards such as buildings, lit soccer fields and baseball diamonds, BMX trails etc. The environmental impact on the area would be devastating.
The 10 foot wide asphalt paths will remove many large mature trees, potentially including one of the oldest trees in the province of Ontario. This large Oak, in the middle of the area, is 16 feet round at its base. We expect many of you are not even aware of its existence. The wildlife habitat of fish, such as trout and salmon in both creeks, the many animals such as white-tail deer and beaver, birds such as gray owls and pileated woodpeckers will also be affected. Cedar Valley is truly one of the few remaining natural areas in Oshawa. Nature lovers for generations to come deserve an area close to home where they can hike on unspoiled trails of leaves and earth and enjoy the natural habitat and wildlife.
We are petitioning that you, the City, save Cedar Valley as an undeveloped conservation area by:
- stopping any development of the park and
- having the area renamed back to The Cedar Valley Conservation Area.
