Save the Arts Post Graduate Centre Kitchen

We the undersigned disagree with the removal of the kitchen from the Postgraduate Arts Centre of The University of Auckland. We regard kitchen facilities as essential to study and research at the centre. We are disappointed at the lack of face to face consultation with the community of students and researchers that use the facility, and point out that our numbers range from disciplines across the whole Faculty.
We see the responsible use and maintenance of the kitchen as both students and the University's responsibility. We ask that plans be halted until this matter is sorted out through face to face meeting with those that use the centre. We propose a solution of registered 15 litre plastic containers that all food must be kept in outside of the fridge. We also request six months to show that the kitchen can be used and maintained in a responsible way by both the University and the students and that we both agree to the following commitments:
Students agree to continue producing graduate research that will earn The University of Auckland national and international acclaim and funding.
The University agrees to supply facilities that enable this level of dedication including: a microwave, access to boiling water, a fridge of suitable size, bench space, cupboard space, and cleaning equipment accessible 24 hours per day.
Students agree to do their own dishes and clean their own mess
University agrees to supply cleaning up gear
Students agree to label all food in the fridge
University agrees to arrange for the cleanout unlabeled food on Fridays
Students agree to keep all items on food shelves in a registered air-tight container
University agrees to supply the container (15 litre containers are available from payless plastics for only 7.50) and chuck out all items not in containers
