The research and educational functions of the British Library are currently under threat. The Treasury is demanding a 7\% cut in BL expenditure which will result in: a reduction in opening hours by one third; the introduction of charges for researchers; the closure of public exhibitions and schools learning programs; the termination of the national newspaper archive; and a reduction in the permanent collections of fifteen percent.

These changes, drastic as they are, would detrimentally affect the British Library's status as a free, open access educational and intellectual institution. Researchers, writers, students, academics and entrepreneurs would be deprived of their national library resource, affecting the intellectual, commercial and cultural productivity of the nation.

Signatories to this petition hereby declare their objections to the reduction in the budget of the British Library and the consequent reduction in BL services and facilities. Signatories therefore demand that the financial cutbacks demanded by the Treasury of the British Library be repealed, in order that the Library may continue to provide the current level of services and facilities into the future.
