Save the Sugar Gliders from the PGC

We the undersigned are in agreement that the sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) should be moved from the jurisdiction of the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture which the Senate Bill No. 1158 Session of 2001 passed to remove domesticated elk from the PGC jurisdiction. As of now the PGC claims authority over such animals under Title 34, Subchapter D, Section 2961-2965. We call for all domesticated sugar gliders to be removed from the PGC jurisdiction.

The following are reasons we are requesting this change:
1) The PGC has confiscated and killed numerous harmless and innocent sugar gliders.

2) The sugar glider is not listed on the exotic animals list so when asked if individuals can own one, officials give different answers depending on to whom they talk. This is not only confusing, but also leaves many people susceptible to fines.

3) Sugar gliders have been captively bred in the United States since the early 1990s and elsewhere for centuries.

4) These small creatures are legal in 45 states and one of those states legalized sugar gliders in March of 2008.

5) Sugar gliders are harmless animals the size of a large hamster and pose virtually no threat to humans or the environment.

6) Such cute and cuddly mammals are an effective learning tool for youngsters' education of marsupials.
